Access to Land, Income Diversification and Poverty Reduction in Rural Kenya AgEcon
Karugia, Joseph Thuo; Oluoch-Kosura, Willis; Nyikal, Rose Adhiambo; Odumbe, Michael; Marenya, Paswel Phiri.
The increasing land scarcity and the worsening trend of poverty in Kenya in recent years have raised concerns about the focus on land-based agriculture as the basis of growth in the rural areas. This paper combines two complementary data sets obtained from two locations in Kenya, drawn against distinctively different land availability patterns, to examine the diverse rural asset base and key sources of livelihood in the rural areas. The analysis reveals that while access to productive land is still an important determinant of livelihoods in the rural areas, even where land holdings are very small, growth in farm productivity alone may not guarantee households sufficient incomes to escape poverty. We find evidence to suggest that growth of non-farm sector...

Decomposition of Variability in Farm Household Assets and Debt AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; El-Osta, Hisham S..
Farm families often hold large quantities of wealth and, like any other family, assess their financial progress by reviewing their net worth (or wealth) position periodically. Wealth has an impact on many decisions such as production, retirement, and succession of the farm. Households, in general, seek stability growth in wealth and, ideally, income as well. In the case of wealth, farm households will be better equipped to handle variability once the contributing sources are identified. This study measures how much of the variability in farm household assets and debt is attributed to the variability in farm and nonfarm sources of assets and farm and nonfarm sources of debt. Using a normalized variance decomposition approach and data from the Agricultural...

Household Consumption and Natural Disasters: The Case of Hurricane Mitch in Nicaragua AgEcon
van den Berg, Marrit; Burger, Kees.
This paper analyses coping strategies and consumption reactions of rural households in Nicaragua to hurricane Mitch, which caused massive losses in especially the agricultural sector in 1998. A switching-regression model confirms theoretical considerations which indicate that responses to transitory incomes depend on wealth. Asset-poor households do and asset-rich households do not adjust their consumption to transitory income changes.

IMPACTS OF COMMUNITY-DRIVEN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMS ON INCOME AND ASSET ACQUISITION IN AFRICA: THE CASE OF NIGERIA AgEcon
Nkonya, Ephraim M.; Phillip, Dayo; Mogues, Tewodaj; Pender, John L.; Kato, Edward.
This study evaluates the impacts of a community-driven development (CDD) project on household income and acquisition of productive assets in Nigeria. Using panel data and difference-in-differences and propensity score matching approaches, the study finds that the project succeeded in targeting the poor and women farmers in its productive asset acquisition component. Participation in the project also increased the income of beneficiaries by about 60%, which is well above the targeted increase of only 20% in the 6-year period of the project. However, sustainability of this dramatic achievement is uncertain since the project did not involve rural credit services. The large cash transfer through its productive asset acquisition component is also unsustainable.

Initiatives For Rural Development Through Collective Action : The Case of Household Participation in Group Activities in the Highlands of Central Kenya AgEcon
Kariuki, Gatarwa; Place, Frank.
Dimensions of the nature, scope, and complexity of collective action in Kenya have evolved over many years. In studying collective action, the aim is to understand why and how people participate in networks of trust. The purpose of this study was to investigate the different objectives that farmers pursue through collective action with the aim of understanding the patterns of people’s participation in collective action, identify factors that influence people to join groups, and identify the costs and benefits of participating in activities of groups. The study was carried out in four sites spread across the highlands of central Kenya. Data was collected from a total of 442 households, focusing on whether members of those households belonged to groups and...

Measuring the Impact of Public and Private Assets on Household Crop Income in Rural Mozambique, 2002-2005 AgEcon
Mather, David; Donovan, Cynthia; Boughton, Duncan.
This brief summarizes detailed analysis of the determinants of household crop income in rural Mozambique from 2002 to 2005. Increased crop income is associated with increases in household land area, use of animal traction, crop diversification into tobacco or cotton, access to market price information, and access to extension agents (for tobacco/cotton growers). Decreases in crop income are associated with drought. Results demonstrate that there are both public and private investments that can enhance farmers’ ability to increase crop income and avoid losses. Priority investments include: development and dissemination of drought-resistant varieties for maize and cassava, conservation farming, animal traction, market information, access to high-value crops...

Pathways into and out of Poverty: A Study of Household Wealth Dynamics in Rural Kenya AgEcon
Muyanga, Milu; Jayne, Thomas S.; Burke, William J..
For the past half-century, African governments and development agencies have experimented with a series of alternative approaches for addressing rural poverty, each giving way to a new paradigm as the persistence of poverty created disillusionment with prevailing approaches. These broad strategies included ‘growth and trickle down’ in the 1960s; basic human needs and state-led integrated rural development in the 1970s; structural adjustment and economic liberalization in the 1980s and 1990s; and, since 2000, a heterodox mix of donor budget support to empower government ownership in the design of participatory poverty reduction strategies, and resurgent interest in agricultural development. However, rural poverty in most of Sub-Saharan Africa appears to be...

Rural Household Access to Assets and Agrarian Institutions: A Cross Country Comparison AgEcon
Zezza, Alberto; Winters, Paul C.; Davis, Benjamin; Carletto, Calogero; Covarrubias, Katia; Quinones, Esteban; Stamoulis, Kostas G.; Di Giuseppe, Stefania.
Agriculture is at the core of the livelihoods of a large share of rural households throughout the developing world. Agricultural growth is a major engine for overall economic growth and possibly the single most important pathway out of poverty in the rural space. This paper characterizes household access to assets and agrarian institutions of households engaged in agricultural activities in a sample of developing countries. The evidence presented in the paper draws from 15 nationally representative household surveys from four regions of the developing world. We find that the access of rural households to a range of agricultural-specific assets (including land and livestock) and institutions is in general low, though highly heterogeneous across countries,...
